Koi Feeding Tips

Koi fish are exceptionally fun and interesting to raise and watch. When it comes to Koi feeding, these amazing fish can actually learn to feed from their owner's hand. During feeding, Koi get to know the person that feeds them and will congregate when it's time for them to eat. Koi feeding will take on a whole new meaning as an owner experiences this great connection with their Koi fish.

Koi can enjoy food consisting of a number of different types of food because they are omnivorous fish. The food Koi eat includes insects such as snails and worms along with plant and meat matter. Koi food comes from both the environment and from their owners. Koi generally have a healthy appetite and will eat whenever something comes their way. Koi are most active in the summer months, and so when Koi feeding, owners can expect them to go after other environmental sources of food such as underwater plants and possibly even grasses that surround the pond.

With Koi feeding, owners should consider providing food consisting of treats from time to time. This could include healthy alternatives such as watermelon, lettuce, or peas. Koi pond owners should also ensure that their Koi feeding consists of the proper mix of fats, vitamins, fiber, protein, and minerals, which are found in store bought Koi food pellets. Using the pellets for Koi feeding also has other advantages in that it will give the owner more time for watching and enjoying the fish as the pellets float on the water, thus requiring the Koi to surface in order to eat it. Owners need that observation time to check their Koi's appetite and to make sure that they are not injured or suffering from any form of illness or disease. Owners will love the beautiful colors that their Koi will have as a direct result of their proper care and diet.

Koi feeding is completely different in the colder winter months. During the cold, owners should not feed them fish food at all. Koi fish have a digestive system that will practically shut down during this time. When the outside temperature is less than fifty degrees Fahrenheit, they should definitely not eat because any food can spoil right in their stomachs causing them to get sick.

When it comes to Koi feeding, owners should be curtain that the food Koi receive will include the right portions, either from Koi food pellets or from their environment. Feeding Koi can take on a whole different meaning from other fish as Koi can actually have a relationship with their owners and will make themselves available for their owners to enjoy. Koi feeding does not have to be a painful endeavor. With these beautiful and social fish, owners can actually get as much pleasure out of feeding as their Koi fish.
