Garden Koi keeping has been a major pastime in Japan since 200 AD yet only recently has the hobby spread across the world.  The beauty and tranquility that a Garden Koi pond can bring to your backyard is unparalleled but a Koi pond is not simply a big in-ground aquarium. Koi ponds are complex aquacultures that need constant attention and upkeep, yet learning how and where to start can be frustrating to say the least.

In a way, modern technology has made keeping Garden Koi much easier than it has ever been.  The internet has made obscure products and services available to everyone at any time whereas as before you could spend days looking for the telephone number and mailing address of a single product provider.  Unfortunately, the internet has also made learning where to begin your adventure in Koi keeping more difficult.

Knowledge is power—but where do you find it?

When I decided to begin keeping Garden Koi, I already had years of tending aquariums under my belt.  I figured a Koi pond wasn’t much different.  I didn’t know how wrong I was.  I went to the library and read everything I could get my hands on but it seemed like every book and magazine I picked up was telling me to do something different.  Most of the sources I found were filled with detailed scientific data, which I’m sure was right on the mark, but I had trouble wrapping my mind around it.

These days it’s easy to turn to the internet Here you can find some truly amazing sources that can teach you about pond construction, filtration systems, and Garden Koi keeping in general but you have to weed through pages and pages of advertisements and websites selling equipment and services without offering any useable advice.  Even when you do find reliable sources, they generally hold only a piece of the puzzle and never the whole picture.  In short, it can be a big hassle!
